Statement of Qualifications

We believe the following are necessary for the successful undertaking and completion of any project:

  • continuous and meaningful involvement of the client and stakeholders at all stages
  • scientific defensibility
  • credibility in undertaking environmental studies and presenting findings
  • broad experience in representing clients in federal and provincial hearings and other legal and quasi-judicial forums

AXYS confidently meets these needs and more.

Organizational Approach

AXYS is equipped to manage the overall co-ordination of your project, including client and government liaison, consultation, management of sub-contracted disciplines, editing and production of study documents, as well as budget and schedule management.

Widely considered to be at the forefront of environmental assessment in Canada, we have honed our project management processes so that these capabilities are maximized to the benefit of our clients. We budget for and manage large assessment projects using an integrated management and accounting system that provides real-time status for all tasks identified in the detailed work plans which are provided to the client.

Using this system, our dedicated Administrative Manager can communicate the status of all tasks and budgets to the client in a regular, concise fashion. Any potential budget variations will be pro-actively identified, evaluated and either addressed internally within the AXYS management framework or discussed with the client if emerging issues or scope adjustments may require budget or schedule modification.Back to top

Project Management Team

AXYS brings significant expertise to senior project management roles. Our management teams are made up of senior advisors with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. This ensures AXYS will be able to respond rapidly and effectively to routine management needs, as well as unforeseen needs that may arise during a project's life span.

Background

For over 18 years, AXYS has been involved in the development of innovative techniques for environmental screening and impact evaluation as well as assessment of impact significance, which have subsequently been applied to numerous development projects. Scientific credibility has been and continues to be the hallmark of the AXYS approach to environmental assessment.

AXYS has managed and participated in environmental issues relating to oil and gas developments, pipelines, hydroelectric facilities, transmission lines, telecommunication projects, highways, recreation developments, forestry, agriculture and mining. This work involved identifying the potential or existing environmental, social and economic effects of resource development projects and developing appropriate environmental protection and monitoring plans.

AXYS is also recognized as one of the leaders in Canada in cumulative effects assessment (CEA). In leading this field, AXYS has developed new, cost-effective techniques to quantify and manage cumulative effects. Many of these methods employ advanced technologies in GIS and computer modeling. We have also assisted government and regulatory agencies in incorporating CEA into their internal review processes, and helped during the establishment of national guidelines for the inclusion of cumulative effects assessment for federally-regulated projects.

For example, AXYS wrote the CEA Practitioners Guide for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. We have also conducted a series of workshops and developed a process to incorporate cumulative effects in the screening of project applications for the Yukon Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

During the development of the hydrocarbon industry in Canada's arctic, AXYS was one of the first consulting firms to actively involve aboriginal communities and other northern residents in environmental assessment and monitoring programs. Over the past 18 years, AXYS has continued to work closely with aboriginal communities in Alberta, British Columbia and northern Canada with respect to compiling and analyzing baseline data, conducting environmental impact assessments, undertaking traditional use studies, and addressing general resource management issues.Back to top
