Barbadian Delegation to the Columbia Icefield
Calgary, Alberta –Jacques Whitford AXYS Ltd., part of the Jacques Whitford
group of companies, is proud to welcome representatives from Caves of Barbados.
A delegation of 22 individuals from Harrison’s Cave, Barbados will be arriving in Calgary on
Monday, June 18, 2007. The delegation will be conducting a two week tour of some of
Alberta’s premier tourism attractions and interpretive centres as part of a fact finding
mission. The group will spend a week at the Columbia Icefield, operated by Brewster
Transportation, followed by another week of tours to attractions such as Head-Smashed-In
Buffalo Jump, the Royal Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology, the Frank Slide, Banff National
Park and Calgary’s Heritage Park.
Harrison’s Cave—Barbados’ most popular tourism attraction—is an underground tour of a
spectacular network of caverns and limestone formations. It draws over 200,000 visitors
annually and is one of only two caves in the world with an underground tram system.
Caves of Barbados Limited, who operates Harrison’s Cave, are undertaking a $10.2 million US redevelopment of the entire attraction. Selwyn Smith, Chairman of Caves of Barbados,
said, “The Redevelopment is part of an initiative to make Harrison’s Cave a world class
attraction and the best in the Caribbean. This exchange with Alberta is a key step in
achieving that goal”.
But why would operators of an underground cave on a small Caribbean island come over
7,000 km to visit a glacier tour in the Rocky Mountains of Canada? The story began in 1998
when AXYS Environmental Consulting (Barbados) Ltd. (AXYS) of Calgary, Alberta was
awarded a contract by the Government of Barbados to conduct a $2.3 million US Feasibility
Study on the redevelopment of Harrison’s Cave and two marine attractions. The study, led
by Mr. Steve Devonish, Director of the government’s Natural Heritage Department (NHD)
(formerly the Environment al Special Projects Unit or ESPU) examined a range of options for
environmentally- and socially-sustainable tourism.
AXYS recommended a major redevelopment of the Harrison’s Cave facilities and operations.
Following the presentation of the study to the Barbadian Government, the NHD once again
retained AXYS to lead a $3.4 million US Detailed Design Study. The study provided detailed
plans and drawings for every aspect of Harrison’s Cave Operations, from new buildings and
grounds, to high tech lighting and ventilation in the Cave, new interpretive facilities and
displays, a complete reorganization of the management and staff structure, environmental
monitoring and community outreach. Rosene Reid, Technical Officer and Project Coordinator
for this component, with the NHD said that “Harrison’s Cave redevelopment will not only reinvigorate
the attraction but will also benefit community residents and enhance the
protection of the fragile environment of Harrison’s Cave. Harrison’s Cave will be the centre
piece of our nature tourism expansion in the central highlands of Barbados”
The Columbia Icefield was identified by the AXYS team as a superb example of how
Harrison’s Cave could be operated. Brenda Edwards, Manager of the Caves of Barbados,
said “Brewster’s operations at the Columbia Icefield face many of the same challenges as we
do at Harrison’s Cave. So despite the snow and ice, it is a very good parallel to our
operations in Barbados”.
Jeff Green, the Project Manager for AXYS, said that the tour would involve a week of job shadowing at the Columbia Icefield, followed by another week of site tours in southern Alberta. “The intent is for management to meet with management, and for the drivers and guides from Harrison’s Cave to work side-by-side with similar people at the Icefields. People can share experiences and ways to do each of their jobs better. Both organizations will likely learn something new.”
Mr. Green pointed out that Brewster Transportation has generously provided the full week of job-shadowing for the 22 Barbadians free of charge. Denise Van Dal, Manager of the Columbia Icefield tour said that Brewster was more than pleased to be able to share our corporate knowledge and experiences with our friends from Barbados. “We are an international attraction, so this exchange is just a natural extension of the way Brewster does their business”.
Following the Columbia Icefield experience, the group will travel to Canmore. Chas Yonge of Canmore Caverns and Brenda and David Holder of Mahikan Trails will lead the group on a one-day “Cave and Canyon” experience to Rat’s Nest Cave and Grotto Canyon. Mahikan Trails and Canmore Caverns will also take the group on a day tour of the best facilities and attractions in Banff National Park, including Brewster’s Sulphur Mountain Gondola.
The group will then return to Calgary for a series of one-day trips to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, the Royal Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology, and Calgary’s Heritage Park. At each facility, management and staff will meet to discuss common issues and solutions to running a successful tourism attraction.
Steve Devonish summed the value of the trip well. “Barbadians and Canadians had a long history of over 300 years in trade, and tourism is key to both our economies. This tour will give our best staff at Harrison’s Cave a chance to work with the best in Canada—trade in ideas, especially in regard to environmental and social sustainability, is vital to both our countries and to the long-term success of our tourism operations”.

Jacques Whitford Goes Carbon Neutral
Saint John, New Brunswick –Jacques Whitford, one of Canada’s largest environmental science and engineering firms, has taken a major step forward in reducing its carbon footprint through a new partnership with the Carbonfund.org Foundation, a leading provider of carbon offset programs.
As of June 1, all of Jacques Whitford’s operations and facilities must now become carbon neutral through a combination of conservation efforts and the purchasing of carbon offsets through Carbonfund.org. The non-profit foundation verified the work Jacques Whitford’s did to analyze their carbon footprint and recommended investments in carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, alternative energy and energy efficiency.
Jacques Whitford is the first major environmental engineering firm to join Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree program. With more than 1,600 employees in 45 offices, Jacques Whitford is demonstrating how larger organizations can minimize their carbon footprint. Jacques Whitford's annual footprint is 8,501 metric tons of carbon which, when offset, is equal to taking 1,840 passenger cars off the road for a year.
“I am very excited to announce our commitment to become a carbon neutral firm,” said Bob Youden, Chief Executive Officer of Jacques Whitford. “Our firm is taking responsibility for the effects of our carbon dioxide emissions while working hard to reduce them. This year we will offset the carbon emissions we are not able to eliminate by purchasing offset credits. We believe that all businesses, industries and communities should bear responsibility to minimize environmental effects and pollution.”
Jacques Whitford recognizes the importance of addressing climate change on a person-by-person, business-by-business basis, which is why it has moved to immediately offset its greenhouse gas emissions.
“Carbonfund.org applauds Jacques Whitford’s leadership and commitment to solving the problem of climate change,” said Carbonfund.org executive director Eric Carlson. “Jacques Whitford’s carbon reduction and offset program serves as an example for all Canadian companies and is supporting our market transformation to a clean energy future.”
Overseeing Jacques Whitford’s carbon neutral initiative is Marty Janowitz, the company’s first Vice President of Sustainability. Mr. Janowitz was appointed to the position last year and since then has built a strong network of advocates throughout the company, which has offices across Canada, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
An important part of that work was the creation of a multidisciplinary team of Jacques Whitford scientists and engineers. Together they analyzed the company’s existing greenhouse gas emissions, evaluated options for change and investigated investments in carbon offsets. The next step is the development of a long-term business plan, which will enable Jacques Whitford to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, environmental performance and sustainability.
“We are currently in the process of setting clear targets to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and improve environmental performance in our offices and operations,” said Mr. Janowitz. “Our sustainability team is also developing practical step-by-step action plans with employees in every office, to ensure that all levels of the company are aware of this initiative and will work towards its success. Jacques Whitford is leading by doing.”
About The Carbonfund.org Foundation
Carbonfund.org is North America’s leading carbon reduction and offset organization with offices in the Washington, DC area and San Francisco. Carbonfund.org educates the public about the dangers of climate change and makes it easy and affordable for individuals, businesses and organizations to reduce their climate impact. Carbonfund.org is reducing the threat of climate change by promoting cost-effective carbon reductions and supporting renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects globally that reduce and offset carbon dioxide emissions. Carbonfund.org works with over 150 corporate and non-profit partners including Dell, Orbitz, Lancôme, Yakima, National Wildlife Federation, Environmental Defense and Working Assets.

Jacques Whitford Partners with Bell Aliant
Strategic alignment allows Jacques Whitford to focus on core operations
Jacques Whitford, a leader in environmental, engineering, scientific and planning disciplines, has partnered with Atlantic Canada’s largest information and communications technology (ICT) provider for outsourced support of its entire ICT environment. Today, Jacques Whitford and Bell Aliant (TSX: BA.UN) jointly announced they have signed an agreement to outsource the operation of Jacques Whitford’s IT infrastructure and implement a fully managed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony environment. The contract, which will be carried out in part through Aliant and xwave, the IT Division of Bell Aliant, has a seven-year term and is valued at more than $40 million.
“Jacques Whitford has experienced consistent and significant year-over-year growth and this contract provides a foundation for the future growth of our business,” said Bob Youden, Chief Executive Officer, Jacques Whitford. “As an employee-owned company, we have entered into this agreement to ensure we can provide the best service to our clients around the world.”
Under the agreement, Aliant will support and optimize Jacques Whitford’s entire ICT infrastructure, which encompasses hardware and software for approximately 1600 employees in more than 40 offices across Canada and the United States. The company will consolidate all of Jacques Whitford’s business applications including data, file, email, VoIP and Wireless functions into a consolidated fully-managed infrastructure. This allows Jacques Whitford to increase overall efficiency and service, as well as capacity for collaboration and knowledge sharing. These capabilities will ensure the company has the ability to effectively meet clients’ current needs and anticipated future requirements.
In addition, the agreement will see resources from Jacques Whitford merge with those of Aliant. This will entail the transition of members of Jacques Whitford IT staff, who will maintain similar positions in Aliant and xwave offices.
“While Information and Communications Technology are key facilitators for the work we do, we recognize that our needs would be better served by an organization for whom ICT is a core business,” said Bob Youden. “Aliant has proven itself to be that organization, and is a partner we’ll be able to work with closely while remaining focused on our own core operations. This agreement allows us to focus maximum energy and attention on our clients and their needs, rather than managing and supporting internal systems.”
“Drawing from the resources of the Bell Aliant family, we are well-suited to meet Jacques Whitford’s needs,” said Paul Kent, COO, xwave and Senior Vice President, Enterprise Solutions. “Having provided various IT and telecom services to Jacques Whitford for a number of years, we’re now building on that relationship and taking a consolidated approach to Jacques Whitford’s business needs as a single-source ICT. With our significant expertise in both IT and communications, we can effectively provide Jacques Whitford with a full suite of business applications, in any of their office locations around the world.”
The agreement was effective August 1, 2006 and was expanded to include VoIP and Wireless, effective January 1, 2007. The agreement is expected to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2007.

After many hours of planning and development, our new web site is finally ready for public viewing! We've put a lot of time and effort into making sure the site reflects both our company values and culture as well as our clients’ unique business needs.
But we're not stopping here. With the first release complete, work is already underway to update and enhance the site.
We welcome all feedback so please let us know what you like, what you don't and what we can do to make sure the AXYS Web site gives you the answers you're looking for.

AXYS Marks 30th Year in Business
2004 marks the 30th anniversary of the day AXYS Environmental Consulting opened its doors in 1974! That first office was in Sidney, British Columbia where we still maintain a full staff. Over the years, AXYS has continued to expand its services and today has operations throughout western and northern Canada. We are proud to have helped clients meet their environmental needs for 30 years and plan to continue our trademark level of service for many years to come.

Staff Christmas Spirit Helps Families in Need
The Calgary office had an active Christmas season. Adopting two
families and buying raffle tickets to benefit the homeless in Calgary
kept the Calgary AXYS staff busy throughout December. Both events were
organized by the Social Committee.
AXYS Calgary adopted two families through the North East Calgary Adopt-A-Family
charitable organization. This organization has operated its Christmas
Hamper Program for financially challenged families in northeast
Calgary since 1996. Over the years this program has assisted numerous
families during the holiday season.
This is the second year that the Calgary office has participated in
the program. Generous cash and item donations meant that we were
able to provide both of these families with many of the requested
items on their lists and more!
Three gift baskets purchased by AXYS and an origami Christmas
ornament handmade and generously donated by Dana Bush's husband
were the items raffled off this year. Money raised through
raffle ticket sales was donated
to The Mustard Seed, a homeless shelter in Calgary.
The Mustard Seed is a non-profit, Christian humanitarian
organization that responds compassionately to the needs of the inner-city's
less fortunate through mobilizing and working with the church and the
community.
Warm thanks to all AXYS staff for helping to make the holidays a little
brighter for others in our community!

AXYS Marks 4th Year of Volunteering with Peigan Fish Rescue
On October 13, Peter Balagus from the Wildlife Division took his family
and joined about 30 other volunteers at the Peigan Nation's annual
fish rescue. AXYS has had representatives at the fish rescue for the
last four years.
While the number of larger fish was down from previous years, a large
number of yearling whitefish were rescued. The long-nosed sucker was
the most common adult fish caught and an 8 lb. brown trout was
the largest 'catch'. AXYS affiliate North/South
Consultants provided a weighted
seine net used to push fish from the canal towards the volunteers who
then used small-meshed dip nets to scoop the fish out of the canal and
into an aerated holding tank. From the holding tank, fish are weighed
and then transported to the Oldman River. Pete says he's started
to perfect the dipping technique after three years of participating!
A hot lunch of chili, soup and sandwiches for the volunteers was plentiful
and satisfying as usual.
